What is a PRO station? Public charging for heavy transport
Heavy transport is going electric, but a truck usually doesn’t fit into a regular charging space. That’s why Plugit is building PRO stations: public charging stations that are easy to access and charge at, even with a heavy vehicle.
In this article, we explain what a PRO station is, where you can find them and why public charging is just as important for the logistics and transport sector as depot charging.
What is a PRO station?
A PRO station is Plugit’s concept for a public charging station designed for heavy transport. The station is dimensioned so that vehicles of all sizes, including HCT combinations, can get in and turn around. The charging power is high, so charging can be done during a break.
That said, a PRO station is open to everyone. The same station serves:
- trucks, including combinations, for which public charging along the route is often the only option on long hauls
- delivery vehicles
- vans, whose height or trailer won’t fit into a regular charging space
- passenger cars, which benefit from high-power charging
PRO stations can be recognised by the PRO prefix, for example PRO Kotka Satama or PRO Lieto Avanti. You can find the stations on the map on our website by filtering for PRO stations (under Stations).
Where are the PRO stations?
We build PRO stations where there is a lot of heavy traffic: at ports, logistics hubs and along main roads. Finland currently has seven PRO stations and two hybrid stations. Five new PRO stations are being planned in Finland, and the network is also growing in Sweden.
PRO stations in Finland
- PRO Port of Kotka (MCS)
- PRO Lieto Avanti (MCS)
- PRO Port of Rauma
- PRO Port of Turku
- PRO Pirkkala Linnakallio
- PRO Tampere Pyynikintori
- PRO Tampere Viinikka

Hybrid stations
A hybrid station has separate charging spaces for both heavy transport and passenger cars.
- Mäkipeura service station, Tervola
- Urjalan Makeistukku
In addition, we offer more spacious charging options for delivery vehicles at the following locations:
- Hesburger Pukinmäki
- Tokmanni, Järvenpää
- Ideapark Lempäälä
- Hesburger Parkano
Upcoming: Megawatt charging stations for heavy transport from Helsinki to Oulu
Our goal is to build high-power PRO charging along the entire E75 route, from the capital region to Oulu. Upcoming stations:
- PRO Vantaa
- PRO Lahti
- PRO Jyväskylä
- PRO Pyhäjärvi
- PRO Liminka
PRO stations in Sweden
In Sweden, the first PRO station is PRO Klevshult, and the next one to open is PRO Eskilstuna. In Sweden, the goal is to build a network along the E4 and E6 roads.
Do you drive a route that still lacks a public PRO station? Suggest a charging location. Customer feedback plays a big role in deciding where the next stations are built.
MCS – megawatt charging for heavy transport
MCS (Megawatt Charging System) is a charging standard developed for heavy transport that enables megawatt-level charging power. It is designed for electric trucks, whose batteries are many times larger than a passenger car’s. The higher the power, the more driving range can be charged during the driver’s break. Megawatt-level charging also makes public charging cost-effective along the way.
Plugit already has two PRO stations in Finland with MCS charging: PRO Kotka Satama and PRO Lieto Avanti. Electric trucks with MCS connectors are already on the market, and their number will grow in the future. In Kotka and Lieto, they can charge already today.

Why is public on-route charging essential for the logistics and transport sector?
Depot charging is enough when a vehicle returns from a short trip to the same place every evening. But everyday life in logistics and transport isn’t always that predictable, and the distance may also be too long without charging along the way.
- Longer routes: In long-haul transport, the driving distance often exceeds the vehicle’s range, so charging along the way is essential. On-route charging makes it possible, for example, to drive between Helsinki and Oulu without returning to the depot.
- Charging during breaks: EU driving and rest time rules require drivers to take a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving. When the break is taken at a PRO station, the battery charges at the same time and no time is wasted.
- Flexibility: At a public charging station, you can also charge in the middle of the day if you get an extra job or your route changes. That way, you don’t have to save battery for unexpected trips.
- Peace of mind: If depot charging falls short for any reason, public charging is a great backup plan.
- Also for subcontractors and vans: Public charging serves the entire transport chain, not just the fleet that uses your own depot.
- Public charging makes it possible to electrify your own and your subcontractors’ fleets without major investments in your own depot.
Depot charging and public charging – Plugit takes care of it all
An electric transport fleet needs two things: reliable charging at the depot and a comprehensive public charging network along the route. Plugit takes care of both.
- Depot charging: we design, build and maintain a charging solution for your company’s own depot or site.
- Public charging: your fleet charges at PRO stations in Plugit’s public charging network along the route.
When the same partner is responsible for both the depot and the route, you have one contact person, one agreement and a clear overview of your fleet’s charging.
All public charging on one invoice
When your fleet charges in the public network, there’s no need for hundreds of individual receipts or driver-specific expense claims. With Plugit’s billing service agreement, all public charging sessions for all your vehicles are combined into one invoice, and costs are easy to track.
You can bring all of your company’s charging together on the same invoice: public and home charging for passenger cars, as well as heavy fleet charging both at the terminal and in the public network. One partner, one invoice, all vehicles.
