Is your charging station haunted? Plugit’s Halloween guide for EV drivers
Dark October evenings, wet tarmac and an empty car park – you don’t have to look far for Halloween atmosphere. For many EV drivers, however, autumn’s biggest scares have nothing to do with pumpkins, but with questions such as whether the battery will last and whether the charger will work. We’ve gone through the four most common autumn EV fears and how to banish them. 👻
1. The range ghost: “What if I run out of charge mid-journey?”
Range anxiety is the classic ‘ghost story’ of electric motoring – and, like most ghost stories, it sounds scarier when told than it actually is. For most people, everyday journeys are significantly shorter than the car’s range.
How to keep the ghost at bay:
- Plan longer routes in advance and check the charging points before you set off.
- Charge little and often rather than waiting for the battery to run low.
- Leave a generous buffer in autumn and winter – in cold weather, heating and a chilly battery eat into your range.
2. The curse of the cold: “Why doesn’t my battery seem to last as long?”
In the cold, battery chemistry slows down, and some of the energy goes into heating the cabin and the battery. That’s why your range drops and charging can start more slowly. It’s not a fault – it’s physics. And there are some good counter-spells for it.
- Pre-heat your car while it’s still plugged in – that way, heating won’t drain the battery.
- If your car has battery preconditioning, switch it on well before a fast-charging stop. A warm battery charges faster.
- Whenever possible, park under cover or in a heated garage.

3. The ghost station: “What if the charger is taken or out of order?”
The worst scenario in a horror film is arriving at a charging point only to find it’s occupied or out of service. The easiest way to avoid this nightmare is to check the situation before setting off.
- Use the Plugit Charge app to check the nearest charging points and their availability before you set off.
- Have a backup option in mind, especially on longer journeys.Bear in mind a backup option, especially on longer journeys.
- If there’s a clear problem at the station, contact our customer service – we’ll sort it out, and your report helps the next driver too.
- Move your car once charging is finished, so the station is free for others. Ghosts may linger – cars shouldn’t.
4. Fear of the dark: “Is it comfortable to charge in the evening?”
In autumn, many of us charge in the dark – in the morning before work or in the evening on the way home. A few small choices make charging smooth and safe, even in pitch darkness.
- In the evening, choose a well-lit charging location, for example one next to shops or services.
- Make the most of your charging time: grab a coffee, do your shopping or warm up in the car.
- Keep the charging cable tidy and out of walkways, so no one trips over it in the dark.
- Follow your charging progress in the app, so you know when to head back to your car.

In the end, the scariest thing is not even trying
Autumn EV scares shrink once you shine a torch on them: a little planning, smart charging habits and the right app in your pocket. The rest is just a good Halloween story.
