Plugit x Volvo – Finland’s first public MCS charge took place in Kotka

Finland’s first public MCS charge has been completed. Volvo’s new all-electric FH Aero Electric charged at Plugit’s PRO charging station in Kotka on Friday 2 October 2026.

This charging event marks a milestone in the electrification of heavy goods transport in Finland. Megawatt-class charging makes electric lorries a genuine alternative even for long-distance routes.

What is MCS?

MCS (Megawatt Charging System) is a charging standard developed for heavy goods vehicles. It enables electric lorries to charge at megawatt-level power, which is many times faster than with standard fast chargers. This means that large batteries can be charged, for example, whilst the driver is on a break.

In Finland, public MCS charging is available at Plugit’s charging stations in Kotka and Lieto. Plugit is building a charging network in Finland and Sweden specifically to meet the needs of heavy goods vehicles: charging power of over one megawatt, charging points designed for heavy vehicles, and locations along major transport routes and in logistics hubs.

Plugit has a total of around 350 public charging points, nine of which are designed for heavy-duty vehicles. A tenth public charging point for heavy-duty vehicles is currently under construction in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Delivery vans and other smaller heavy-duty vehicles can also make use of Plugit’s wider public charging network.

Volvo’s new all-electric truck: 700 kW and 700 km

The Volvo FH Aero Electric electric truck, charged in Kotka, is capable of charging at a power of up to 700 kW and has a range of up to 700 kilometres on a single charge. The combination of a long range and megawatt charging opens up entirely new routes for long-distance electric transport.

The electric truck was charged both via the Volvo Open Charge service and directly using Plugit’s charging cables, and both methods worked flawlessly.

“Finland’s first public MCS charging session is a significant step towards the electrification of heavy goods transport in Finland. A long operating range and fast MCS charging make electric trucks a viable option even for longer transport journeys. Volvo Open Charge, meanwhile, makes it easier to plan and pay for charging, which streamlines the use of electric trucks in day-to-day transport operations,” says Janne Silvonen, Product Manager for Volvo’s electric lorries.

Volvo Open Charge makes running errands hassle-free

Plugit is a partner of the Volvo Open Charge service in Finland. The service forms part of the Volvo Connect fleet management system, and through it, haulage companies can search for charging points suitable for heavy goods vehicles, view details of these points and plan charging as part of their daily operations. Charging can also be paid for directly via the service, so charging at Plugit stations is just as straightforward for Volvo’s electric trucks as refuelling.

Come and see the electric truck and meet Plugit on the Volvo Trucks tour from 6 October to 11 November.

Volvo’s new all-electric lorry is on display and available for test drives as part of the ‘New Power on the Road 2026’ tour, which will visit 27 locations across Finland. Plugit is a partner of the tour.

A breakfast event will be held in each location from 8.30 am to 9.30 am, at which Volvo experts will talk about the new generation of electric lorries. Please register for the breakfast event at least three working days in advance. Test drives of the tour vehicles will be available from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm.

Plugit’s experts can be found in at least the following locations:

Are you planning to electrify your fleet?

An electric lorry performs best when charging is planned as a whole: at the home depot overnight or during breaks, and quickly along the route whilst on the road. Plugit helps with both.

We’d be happy to explain what electrification would look like for your fleet and routes. Get in touch with one of our experts online – or come and have a chat with Plugit’s experts on the Volvo Trucks tour.
