Outotec Enables Workplace EV Charging for Customers and Employees
At technology company Outotec, sustainability is a core part of everyday operations. Outotec has a strong environmentally conscious mindset and actively encourages its employees to make more sustainable choices.
Encouraging electric and plug‑in company cars
Outotec operates 143 company cars in Finland, of which 54 are currently plug‑in hybrids or fully electric vehicles. According to Erkko Malinen, who is responsible for properties and the company car fleet, Outotec updated its car policy a year ago to be more environmentally friendly. Employees were encouraged to choose either a fully electric vehicle or a plug‑in hybrid as their company car, driven by increasingly strict emissions regulations.
Outotec has been tracking its own CO₂ emissions since 2013, and the average carbon dioxide emissions of all company cars have now dropped below 100 grams per kilometre. At present, emissions average 87 grams, while the average emissions of newly ordered vehicles are 57 grams.
“In practice, people are ordering only electric or hybrid vehicles. We have tracked emissions for many years, and every year the figures have gone down. I’m very pleased with that. Our workplace charging infrastructure is in good shape—thanks to Plugit.”
Convenience is the key benefit of workplace charging
In addition to company cars, the charging points also enable EV charging for employees who drive their own electric or hybrid vehicles. At Outotec’s Espoo office, the parking garage includes 44 charging points, and the Lappeenranta site also offers several chargers.
“It’s an environmentally friendly investment,” Malinen notes.
Outotec initiated the charging project, reaching an agreement with the landlord, who covered half of the investment costs. Plugit, selected through a competitive tendering process, was responsible for site assessment, installation, and ongoing maintenance of the charging equipment.
“The process was short and the implementation went smoothly. We received the charging solution as a turnkey service.”
Workplace charging is a practical solution for electric vehicles and enables plug‑in hybrids to drive a meaningful share of their mileage on electricity. From a workplace charging perspective, taxable benefits must be taken into account. Plugit handles the allocation and billing of charging costs.
Positive impact on employer brand
Feedback on the charging facilities has been positive, and the availability of chargers has further increased demand.
“Encouragement creates demand, and today there are a lot of plug‑in vehicles. Charging facilities also have a positive impact on employer branding.”
According to Malinen, Plugit’s service has worked exactly as agreed. Support, maintenance, and customer service have all functioned well, and Outotec has been particularly satisfied with the ease of vehicle charging. Usability improvements have also received praise—for example, fixed charging cables were installed to make connecting vehicles significantly faster.
“I recommend the EV charging concept to others as well. Employers should encourage environmentally friendly mobility and make it easy to choose.”
On 1 July 2020, Outotec merged to form Metso Outotec.
